Representation in decision-making is a right which Nigerians have been
fighting for since colonial times and most recently, during the struggle to
end military rule. Notwithstanding that democratic rule was restored 1999,
women still do not have proportional representation in decision-making
positions.

Nigeria falls in the category of countries with the lowest proportion of women
in public office. In 1999, 2003, and 2007 elections, the proportion of women
in the federal house and senate was 3%, 6%; and 7% respectively (and
some of the seats are still being contested).

Representation is a right. As citizens of Nigeria women have the right to
participate in all levels of governance. It is also a matter of responsibility.

If women do not have a chance to participate, it will be difficult for them to
fulfil their responsibilities as citizens by influencing the allocation of
resources and setting of national/state/local development priorities.

30 by 11 is a campaign designed to run through May 2011 -launched by
KIND, a WMW partner to ensure that women secure 30 percent all political
and decision making positions by 2011.

  • The campaign builds the capacity of NGOs and individuals to engage
politicians and political institutions in 36 states of Nigeria on the
issue of increasing women’s political representation.

  • It advocates and lobbies for a legal quota (constitution and/or
electoral law) for women’s participation in politics and decision-
making at all levels of government and political parties.

  • It educates the public about issues, builds campaign support and
has established a legal fund for women-political aspirants who seek
    to challenge electoral fraud.

  • To ensure the sustainability of the 30 by 11 campaign, KIND delivers
workshops and mentoring program that build the capacity of young
women who are interested and motivated to participate in politics.

The series also exists to offer
insights and information on
institutions, systems, laws, tools, etc.
-how they affect and impact women
and community as a whole. Since its
inception, the various panel
discussions, debates and roundtables
have been a great success, drawing
together trailblazers from all
backgrounds and touching on a
wide-range of topics.

The core objective is to inspire a new
generation of change-actors, able to
analyze their own lives, make their
own decisions and replicate positive
outcomes by building awareness,
skills, knowledge, confidence and
sharing their experiences through
'Pay Forward' initiatives.

Through new knowledge gained from
participation, young women will
rediscover themselves with improved
notions of self-worth, bodily integrity.
It is also hoped that overtime,
women will control and influence
private, household and public
resources.
