Thinking critically about media and speaking out on the media main stage are
among our strongest tools against propaganda and manipulation in today's media
culture. Yet at a time when the walls between journalism, advertising, entertainment
and marketing are disintegrating, it is becoming increasingly difficult for women's
and public interest voices to make a real dent in the public debate.

In today's hyper-saturated media climate, negative images of women area
everywhere, from crime shows depicting intense, sexualized violence against women,
to inaccuracy and bias in news coverage of social, economic and political issues that
affect women's lives.

The WMW Partnership panel session should present a sliding-scale, capacity-building
media platform to give participants the tools they need to challenge media bias and
get their own messages heard.

The session should explore sources of information, attitudes of the media towards
women; the need for women to take the initiative in educating and organising
themselves, the potential of 'non-conventional' media channels such as churches,
funerals, and weddings; and the possibilities of established media providing
dedicated coverage to women's issues.

Through this session, participants learnt concrete, easily adaptable strategies to:
  • Deconstruct media “spin” and expose inaccuracy
  • Generate positive media messages by building relationships with reporters,
recognizing news hooks and developing successful talking points,
  • Respond to media bias with effective letters to the editor, op-eds, studies and
    editorial meetings
  • Access—or create—independent media sources
  • Leverage their power in initiating a media integrity movement
